Welcome to the family! “Capitola by the Sea Rental” Our newest Beach House to join our variety of Beach House Rentals in the picturesque Capitola Village. We couldn’t be more excited to introduce this whimsical, sunset colored new property to you.

Capitola by the Sea

Let’s start off from the moment of arrival to your Capitola vacation home; as you simply park your vehicle, ascend the wide stairway, you enter your private, outdoor living area adjacent to the front door. You’ll find a serene, glass walled deck so as not to obstruct any views no matter where you’re situated. There is so much space for you and your guests to stretch out.

Sink into an adirondack with your summer read, host “Happy Hour” under the patio umbrella, and grill up your evening meal with the new gas BBQ. One block away you’ll find Capitola Wine Bar and Merchants and Reef Dog Deli. They both stock everything you need for that special event. Even the chef joins the party with an all inclusive deck; no one misses a laugh or the glorious sunset that is sure to make you pause and soak it all in.

Capitola by the SeaAs you make your way indoors, the living room invites you to a corner sitting area for some serious conversation about your Capitola vacation plans. Or head straight to the comfy couch, put up your feet and settle in for your streaming programs. This beach house offers a large flat screen, smart TV with HULU live ready for you.

A lovely arched entrance invites you into the spacious where you’ll find modern, updated appliances, a large island with bar stools and a beautiful marble dining table. The kitchen is fully stocked with all necessary items for preparing any meal you choose. Capitola by the Sea

Just off the kitchen is another private deck for taking in the views of the charismatic yet grand homes perched atop Depot Hill looming over the Capitola Village. It’s the perfect cozy spot to start your morning or wind down the night and see the sparkling lights lingering in quaint Capitola by the Sea.

Make your way up a couple of steps to the bedrooms. The left side hosts a comfortable queen bed, views of the front deck and a private ensuite, enclosed with a charming Barn Door. To the right is a 3 person sleeping Capitola by the Seaarrangement with a Hollywood twin over full to invite fun, storytelling times for the nights ahead. There is also a large walk in closet and a delightful, colorful bench for hanging out on.

Just outside the second bedroom in the hall is a contemporary, ample bathroom with a large walk in shower. You’ll also find a washer/dryer behind the hall closet door and plenty of shelving for any necessary storage.

This dog friendly Capitola by the Sea beach house, rests in the heart of Capitola Village. All the fun Capitola Village shops are literally around the corner, the local eateries just on the other side and then the ultimate destination “Capitola Beach” only a few more strides.

There really is no need to get back in your car. To keep up your exercise routine, head over to the notorious Depot Hill Steps that begin just behind Mijo’s Taqueria. The heart pounding, 86 steps is worth the incredible view you first looked up to from your kitchen patio. Roam along the sea cliff edge and into the neighborhood of Depot Hill. You’ll find charming beach homes amidst grand 19th century homes, tucked within lush, blooming  gardens and distinguished trees. You may just want to take another go at the cement staircase and keep that cardio going.

For a less daunting leg stretch, the riverside pathway is the perfect stroll. Morning, day or evening, the happenings along the river are so enjoyable to take in all the sights and sounds. Wander back to where you started with ocean views that peek through the Stockton Bridge and links its way across Soquel Creek. It’s the perfect backdrop for all your photo ops.

When a little entertainment is in the plans head on over to the Wharf House situated near the end of the amusing Capitola Wharf. Live music, dancing, food, drinks and fun for all with people watching at its liveliest. Soak in the views of Monterey Bay and watch the sun go down upon Santa Cruz all the way across to Pacific Grove.

Of course, your vacation rental awaits you. We truly love this new property addition to our Beach House Rentals and invite you to experience a family adventure, a couples getaway, a flexcation or any other reason you can dream up on your Capitola vacation. It will become your home away from home and you can go ahead and say “Yes, I’m a local.”

Ordinary things to do in Extraordinary times or Visa Versa

Any way you look at it, Capitola Village is extraordinary at all times! With Covid lingering in our lives, Beach House Rentals wanted to share new things happening in our “Happy Place” and some ideas that will keep you and your families moving in positive ways toward the future.

All of our Capitola Village beach homes come equipped with kitchens to cook up your meals but sometimes, why bother? CAPITOLA VILLAGE RESTAURANTS have been whipping up feasts all along these current obstacles. They just want to feed you and are ever-so-happy to please your appetites. Whether dining outside on their cozy curbside bistros or taking it to go, the beach and your lovely abode are all within walking distance.

Our newest Capitola Village restaurant family member is Reef Dog Deli. We anxiously awaited to see this one open, conveniently across the street from our Beach House Rentals office. They have something for every whim, every taste bud, every weather condition. Today, I’m diggin in to the Reefy’s {Smoked beef brisket pastrami, melted Vermont sharp cheddar, Guinness Stout caramelized onion relish, stone ground mustard, on toasted Jewish rye} and probably later in the afternoon I may just grab a quick, melt in your mouth, lemon cookie and ……. Oh yes, back to work!

With the new kid in town, let’s not forget about our ol’ loyal village favorites. Who leaves town without a slice and a Tee from the 1st original 1981 landmark Pizza My Heart? Take your slice or the whole pie over to the colorful tiled beach sea wall to catch the glorious sunsets this time of year.

Need to get your steps in before settling down for sunset hour?  Head on up to Gayle’s Bakery & Rosticceria for their amazing Blue Plate Dinner nightly special. It’s a locked in favorite among locals. Continue your trek up to another local gem at HIHN PARK Linger down your evening there with plenty of distance from others and capture the entire Capitola Village simmer in color.

With the ocean breeze, the gentle waft of waffles will lead you straight to Souza’s Ice Cream & Candy. Creamy delights stuffed inside freshly made waffle cones topped with your heart’s desire to make all we’ve been through worth it. Wander along the riverwalk taking your time with every delectable lick and enjoy the comings and goings of the flowing Soquel Creek. Active with ducks and seagulls, occasionally a Great White Egret or Green Heron can be spotted, along with other various bird species.

As we adjust to the changing times some of us may not want to go back to exactly how things were. Tight scheduling, juggling all the family’s activities left many of us exhausted just looking at the daily calendar. We’ve figured out we’re more comfortable at home; more motivated and able to fit things into our schedule. Exercise isn’t a dreaded word anymore. The creativity of Virtual exercise class has taken over how we view a much needed healthy habit.

The thing is even on vacay when you’re at your home away from home, and you’ve devoured a  Reefy’s sandwich, a couple of slices of pizza and a “settle the tummy with a sherbert” psych you can still participate in your exercise routine any time you darn well please.

Our Capitola Merchants have done an awesome job of keeping the shopping needs of visitors and locals open and safe. I’ve noticed the kindness and patience of both shopkeepers and shoppers. I certainly appreciate not only safe space, but space in general to get a good look at new arrivals and maybe things that are always offered but have missed “seeing” in the past. While waiting for your turn to go in, take advantage of the creative window displays. They’re always changing and once inside you may not see it the same way. They are meant to entice you in but now they captivate you to linger and visually enjoy.

Need to spread your wings, maybe do something you never thought of doing? Let this link Capitola Wharf lure you in. Try your hand at fishing off the pier, no license required! Capitola Boat and Bait will hook you up with everything needed. Or if you’re up for the challenge the Bay offers, they will set you up for a fun filled day on the water.

When all is said and done the Wharf House is the perfect spot to wind down your day. Let the surrounding sounds, the intoxicating aromas and the visually stimulating Pacific Ocean remind all of us of the blessings we are sure to find in these extraordinary times.

Ditch the Winter Blues with stunning Beach Views

Whether it’s dreary skies that have you down or the lingering dealings of the past year, one thing that never disappoints is “The beach” First off, this time of year there is more space to relax on the sand. Find your favorite spot, maybe the one that’s always taken in the busy season or discover a new one you never saw with the summer crowds. Outdoor living is where it’s at and how lucky are we to spend it here in Capitola. Beach House Rentals has a little something for everyone; so browse around, give us a call and skip the winter blues in a positive, active, healthy direction.

Set up the tents and lay out the blankets along with all the necessary snacks or take-out from the many Capitola’s eateries and spend the day in vacay mode. During the “off season” you can spread your wings with your frisbee skills without worrying it’ll land up in someone else’s lap. Or challenge your core group to a round robin of Paddle Ball or Corn Hole. Beach time fun is sure to be had with so many family friendly games. Check out 10 Best Beach Games in 2021 for easy, packable beach fun.

Yoga and pilates enthusiasts join one of the many available outdoor/beach classes @ pleasure point yoga Or pack your boom box and groove out to your own zumba class oceanside. If you’ve never danced on the beach before, it’s a workout besides being free and fun.

The changing tides this time of year offer so much adventure and discovery. Be prepared with the king tides to be up close and personal with what lies beneath on our ocean floor.  However, if all you really want to do is start that book you’ve been meaning to read, go for it. Of course if a nap happens to creep in like the ocean breeze, don’t fight it. Just remember to stay in vacay mode.

Time to head to the dwelling place; only steps away is your Luxury Oceanside Dream Beach House  Indoor and outdoor comforts; This is luxury at it’s finest. This beach house sleeps 9 with amenities to accommodate your every mood. So come and go as you please and wake up every morning filled with unlimited possibilities.

Looking for somewhere your furry friends can accompany, just cross the street for three dog friendly beach view options. The Capitola Cliffs # 1,3 and 4 offer a combination of ease, comfort, and the best “people watching” balcony around. Right now, during the off season book a 2 (or more) night stay and get the 3rd night free. Now that’s something to brighten up the winter blues!

Capitola Holiday Traditions

How will you keep your Holiday traditions alive this year? With this year being a bit different, lets choose joy and keep our holiday traditions alive – or make new ones. This year may take some thinking outside the box; nonetheless it’s important for your sake and those you love to bring holiday cheer to the forefront.

We’d like to share some of our Beach House Rentals team holiday traditions and would love to hear back from you about yours. Let’s inspire one another. Sharing talents with each other is true gift-giving from the heart.

Decorate!

How many times have we said “Uh, I just don’t have time to decorate!” This year especially, there is no excuse. It’s never too late to get started, so drag out those dusty holiday bins or get creative with your craft skills; holiday spirit is counting on you.

Decorate your home or office. Although this is usually a favorite team activity for the Beach House Rental girls to do together, this year was a little different. Nevertheless, with social distancing in mind and masks on, a few festive touches were added to the Beach House Rentals office. Stockings were hung,  windows were painted with holiday cheer, big and small Christmas trees are scattered about, and string lights are up and twinkling away!

Dede, Sara and Misty have a long-standing tradition since their own childhood of cutting down their own trees. Now trekking their growing families up to the numerous tree farms in the Santa Cruz mountains they are passing this full day of fun and energy on to their own tikes. Last I searched there are still some open farms, so check before you trek.

The 3 of them also have yearly outings to see all the lights on the boats at the Yacht Harbor. It’s definitely Santa Cruz style and one that never gets old. The glistening lights dance on the water, fill up the sky and create a glow all around the Harbor. Sharon goes out of her way most nights to wind through and witness this festive tradition.

Making gingerbread houses is what dreams are made of and a miracle needed to keep ‘em standing. Unless you have Misty along your side. She creates masterpieces yearly and proudly displays her works of art.

Making wreaths at Dig Gardens in Santa Cruz last year (Dec. 2019)!

Think writing Christmas cards is a chore? Not the year Sharon bought a blank packet of note cards with envelopes, colorful glitter and lots of Elmers. She and her boys drew wreaths, trees, angels and stars with the glue and glitter galore and sent out homemade Christmas cards. Spending so much time and letting the little ones create their own designs brought so much meaning to them that year. With glue, anything is possible.

Nothing says Christmas spirit more than homemade decorations. Creative card displays, stringing popcorn, dried orange slices and cranberries or cutouts of tissue paper snowflakes scream family time. Hunt the forest floor for pinecones, holly berry and acorns and create a one of a kind wreath for the front door.  Trust me when I say it doesn’t need to be perfect. The fun is in the creation and once it is hung you can’t help but smile in wonder.

Baking and Cooking!

Tamales seem to be a favorite tradition with many of us here at Beach House Rentals. I personally have never participated in holiday tamale making so I’m counting on my beach house team to hook me up! My forte is gingerbread men cookies with lots and lots of cinnamon red hots for decor.

To warm up her family this time of year, Belinda concocts a comforting and tasty Mexican Ponche. Simmering with seasonal fruits such as apples, pears, oranges and guavas; spiced with cinnamon, cloves, tamarind and hibiscus. Her family also celebrates Las Posadas; beginning December 16th, 9 days of song and prayer with family and neighbors. A commemorative journey she has done year after year and passes down through the generations. One that will surely be missed this year but with some creative thinking, one that will carry on in the family home.

Dia de los Reyes (3 Kings day) is celebrated on January 6th and Alison tells us the story behind this exciting tradition. Rosca de Reyes (King Bread) a sweet, scrumptious bread shaped in a circle, topped with candied fruit to represent a crown of jewels is served to all gathered together. There are hidden baby figurines inside, representing the baby Jesus and whoever receives one in their piece are in charge of the next celebration. Also gifts are exchanged this day, sometimes in the stockings that are hung and sometimes like a treasure hunt around the home. It’s a celebration worth waiting for and finalizes the Christmas season.

If you can do so safely, gather with a small group of close friends or family and share your kitchen talents.

Caroling

Some of you may have been listening to Christmas carols since Halloween ended but don’t let all you’ve heard on the air waves be the ending note. Warm up your vocal cords, have a hot toddy if necessary and have some fun singing your favorite tunes. Who of us have not challenged ourselves to the 12 days of Christmas or gotten a little wild with their fa la la la la’s and their ho ho ho’s?

Listen to the sounds of your ancestors; Silent Night has been translated into 140 different languages. Cassy loves her Christmas music, be it country, pop, classical, or the simple sounds of the harp and flute. The community, lights, town decor, getting dressed up and of course the music is what brings the wonder of Christmas to her. I love hearing her sing and hum and hope one day she’ll sing me her angelic version of her favorite “Oh Holy Night” or the ever joyful “Joy to the World”.

A song is sure to brighten up the gloomiest of days.

Volunteer/Gift Giving

Sara has a fun way of prolonging the anticipation of gift giving. She sends her husband on a scavenger hunt, staging hints around the house to find. On Christmas morning he gets his final clue and the surprise. Naughty or nice, that’s a clever way to bring out the kid in you.

Whether you’re on the giving end or the receiving end, generous or grateful, we are all wealthy in one way or another. Giving of our time is about as precious as a paycheck and almost harder to give than something that costs money. If this year finds your means still afloat or not, you won’t have any trouble finding an individual or family who needs you. Many of us seek those in need through church, senior centers, hospitals and nursing homes. We also shop locally to support businesses in our Capitola  community.

Christmas movie marathons

On a final note, make sure to make time for yourself. Reminisce of Christmases past, throw on your flannels, serve yourself your favorite snack, cozy up on the couch, and have a movie marathon. We are spoiled here in Capitola; sunny days, beach weather in December but your favorite movies can take you on a dreamy trip to another time, anywhere.

From everyone at Beach House Rentals may the finish line to 2020 bring you and your families hope, peace and love. We look forward to new beginnings and can’t wait to see you all in the New Year!

Autumn Changes in Capitola Village

Autumn is a time of change; One I think most would agree on, is a welcome pleasure.

Hot, endless summer days drift into cool, crisp air.

Witnessing colorful leaves afloat around us brings a joy of natural beauty and wonder.

Chasing sunsets arrive earlier with mystic skies looming in the distance.

Usually the saying goes “Fall back” but I say let’s move forward!

Take me to the river…

We at Beach House Rentals love our Capitola Riverside homes.riverview

The peaceful Riverview Condo (Unit B) and the Relaxing Family Condo by the River (Unit A) are both a couple favs of our most loved guest reviews. Work and school are essential this Fall but everyone needs a little downtime. Our Riverside beach homes offer just that.

Both kitchens are stocked with the basics to whip up breakfast and get right to work. There is plenty of space to spread out the projects, quiet corners for those zoom meetings and views to inspire new ideas. When a little break is needed, head out the door and stroll along the riverside pathway. There are always a raft of ducks making their way along the flowing river and all kinds of wildlife sounds to perk up little ones ears. It’s a delight to peek through the garden archways of your Riverview neighbors whom I’m sure love to hear the ooohs and ahhhs of your admiration. Many times I’m motivated by how others use their time and talents and it releases my creativity.

If you’re feeling extra energetic, or have a couple of bicycles, circle your way through Riverview Dr. to Peery Park for a hidden forest treat. And when you’re ready to plan the evening meal, another walkable source is Capitola Village Produce Market  and the fresh fish, meat and poultry from the fish lady. There, you will find everything needed for a barbeque feast on your riverfront oasis.

We’ve recently added a few bright colored Adirondack chairs to chill out in, along with the picnic table for your own private creekside dining. If the fog rolls in early, light up that fire pit to extend your outdoor afternoon. When the comforts of home call you back in, know that cozy, fireside feeling doesn’t end outdoors. Both riverside homes have a fireplace. Unit A has a wood burning hearth for all to enjoy and wind down the evening. Unit B has a gas fireplace to warm up to as you catch the sunset slowly closing up the day.

And Beyond…

The Riverside is just where it’s at. Neighbors, friendly faces, home away from home is what makes Riverview Ave. so special. Be sure to check out.

The Capitola Venetian Experience

We at Beach House Rentals believe in simple pleasures…the smell of coffee with the sunrise, hearing the seagulls calling you outside to start the day; The joy of family and friends creating special moments together. What’s more gratifying, reading a book curled up under a beach umbrella, drifting off to sleep with the ocean breeze; A roundtable of paddleball or corn hole, or all of it? The choice is yours.

Our most cherished spot to do this is our captivating, iconic, beachfront Venetian capitola venetian

The charming Capitola Venetian # 3 is cozy and spacious all at the same time. This colorful cottage is everything a Capitola beach house should be. Light, bright, and dreamy await you. Let the outdoors in, with the double french doors, windows on both sides, and you have a complete open wall of beachfront living. From the kitchen, to the dining table and living space the views are enchanting and exciting. The bedroom tucked away in the back is a great snuggle spot for everyone to be included. With a queen bed and 2 twin bunk beds, bedtime stories will be a breeze. When the timing is just right, sneak back out to the oceanfront living room for a nightcap and let the lull of the tide create stories of your own. Whether you’re flying solo, on an intimate escape, or having some close knit family time, magical moments are sure to happen.

The sand and the ocean are front and center of the lovely Capitola Venetian,  and there’s so much more. A little to the left is Soquel Creek. You can catch kayakers and paddle boarders sneaking through under the iconic Railroad trestle, making their way past the esplanade and quaint restaurants overlooking the water. It’s so entertaining to see the family of ducks venturing out amongst the safety of the river banks. Or watch the comings and goings crossing over the Stockton Ave bridge that arcs over the river. A little to the right is the lively Capitola Wharf with picture perfect angles to capture Instagram moments and plenty of fishing lines hoping to secure the “Catch of the Day.” When the skies are crystal clear, Aptos, Moss Landing, Monterey and Pacific Grove stand proudly with us, sharing our incredible Bay.

Our hearts are full when we see the smiles and hear the laughter of our guests. We cherish reading your comments of the happy and joyful moments created at your beach house. Here at Beach House Rentals no matter what the current global situation,

our #1 goal for all our guests to experience is happiness, joy and satisfaction. With uncompromising customer service we strive to meet those expectations for you.

When Vacation Plans Go Haywire

Let’s face it…..sometimes, stuff happens on Vacation!

Weather forecast calls for sunny skies and a storm sneaks in.

Your toddler takes a tumble and needs a couple of stitches.

The night out turned out to be an all nighter.

This is the Central Coast, where Plan B’s are just as pleasing…..

Just in case stuff happens!

A Natural Umbrella

nisene marks forest The majestic, lush landscape in the Forest of Nisene Marks provides a “natural” umbrella. The forest takes on a whole new life during and after a good soaking. Take a deep, long inhale and let all your senses come alive. Smell the earthy, minty, herbal fragrance surrounding you; Enhanced when wet. Taste the air around you; Oxygen is life and there isn’t anywhere, cleaner or fresher to get that than in a dewy forest.

Listen to the sounds that echo; Birds squabbling over a fresh, plump worm.

See the creepy crawlies come out from hiding; The iconic banana slug breathes through their skin, so they need it to be wet. Feel the tickling sensation of cool, fresh drops landing on your neck; Giving the squeals to even the mopiest member in the group. Of course, you can always anticipate a rainbow right from the wall of windows at the stunning Luxury Oceanside Dream Beach House.

Stitches Happen even on Vacation

That’s a bummer, especially on vacation. Can’t get it wet. Can’t get sand on it.

Hurts to walk. Make the most of the situation and head to Petroglyph Ceramic Lounge where you can let your imagination run wild. It’s a sure win to cheer everyone up no matter what age group the clan is. And if you’re feeling extra artistic check out

The Painted Cork a unique artist studio that offers classes based on the style of painting you want to create, taught by artists themselves. There are two studios; one for 21 years and up where you can sip your favorite adult beverage while exploring your creative side, and under 21 for families, teens, kids or anyone not participating in cocktails. Honestly, no excuse necessary to go have some fun, get creative, make magic or just bring out the Picasso in you.

The tempting night-life of Capitola

Relax with a massage at Capitola Village Massage, detox your skin at Vice or bring those locks back to life @ Monet. Finish up with the tranquil sound of waves and a sunset, then call it a night!

Professional Vacation Rental Standards

capitola venetian

With everyone’s wellbeing in mind, a Central Coast road trip could be just what’s needed as we start to travel again. 2020 started off fairly ordinary with some anticipation of what the new decade would bring, then life as we knew it changed its course rather abruptly. What hasn’t changed is Beach House Rentals dedication to providing our guests with the ultimate vacation experience while keeping in check with any new rules and regulations put into place. We feel confident that our standards are the best for you and our community and are in compliance with county ordinance. So let’s get started on why destination Capitola is an awesome choice.

The Place That Has it All

central coast road trip

When you think of vacation, what comes to mind? Relaxation, good food, water sports, hiking, exploring, and more. The list goes on and here on the Central Coast I think it’s fair to say we have it (almost) all. That makes a Central Coast road tip the perfect vacation option for you. From the rugged, temperamental waters of the coastal shoreline where you can challenge your gutsy side with kitesurfing Santa Cruz Kitesurfing or to the endless, serene beaches that speak to your inner soul. Explore the tide pools & sea creatures that lurk among the rock and kelp. For the planner in the family the Tide Times and Tide Chart for Santa Cruz will point you in the right direction.

Loch Lomond Recreation Area

Another water/land option is the hidden gem of Loch Lomond Recreation Area No swimming allowed, however boat rentals are available for fishing or exploring miles of secluded coves. Loch Trail dips in and out of Douglas Fir and Redwood Groves. Pack a picnic and spend a glorious day off the beaten path. Check for opening updates.

Seymour Marine Discovery Center

Without even realizing, you’re in a natural learning environment while vacationing on the incredible Central Coast. One example you may not have discovered is the Seymour Marine Discovery Center; part of the UCSC campus. It may have some restrictions as of now, however the numerous walking and bike paths are an adventure in themselves. The dramatic skeletons of a blue whale and grey whale are sure to astonish any age along with various other sea life exhibits.

Neary Lagoon

The hidden gem of Neary Lagoon takes you to another world. Exotic, tranquil, eerie are some words that come to mind when winding in and out of the Lagoon. Take your time on this route: you never know when a Great Blue Heron will gracefully land or a raft of baby ducks venture out of refuge.

Santa Cruz Pickleball

Did someone say pickleball? Many tennis courts in Santa Cruz County adjacent to beautiful parks SC Parks have the option of pickleball courts. Pickleball is just as fun to say as it is to play so if it’s just pickleball your wanting check it out Santa Cruz Pickleball

10 Day Trips to take on your Capitola Vacation

10 Day Trips to take on your Capitola Vacation

There are MANY benefits to renting a beach house in Capitola Village – one being that everything is just steps away! Many of our guests share that they didn’t have to move their car for their whole stay! You can leave your car parked and walk to shops and boutiques, restaurants and cafes, wine tasting rooms and tap houses, salons, and – of course – the beach!

Well, what if you’d like to venture out of Capitola Village and see “what’s out there”? Follow our list below of our Top 10 Favorite Day Trips that you can take on your Capitola Vacation:

1. Big Sur Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Falls

Take this hour and a half scenic and incredibly beautiful drive down Highway 1 South. Be sure to have your phone charged to take photos along the way. There are plenty of places to stop and get out, take a selfie, or just a photo of the view, including the famous Bixby Bridge. Continue on the highway and we highly recommend taking the trip all the way to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and check out the famous waterfall (photo above) – it’s just a 10 minute walk from the road. Since you’re going to get hungry, our two favorite choices are: the Restaurant at River Inn Big Sur where you can enjoy your meal on the patio while taking in the view of the Big Sur River and then walk down to the river and sit in it on adirondack chairs – or if you’d like to dine with a view of the Pacific Ocean, then you MUST go to Nepenthe.

2. Carmel Valley

Refuge Day Spa in Carmel

Drive down the coast on Highway One and cut through to Carmel Valley for a different kind of scenic view. Drive through the rolling hills and grapevines and enjoy a plethora of relaxing activities! We HIGHLY recommend spending a very relaxing day at Refuge Day Spa! This is a silent spa to retreat and treat yourself to a massage or facial, and then enjoy a couple hours in the hot and cold pools, saunas, steam rooms, read around the fireplaces or a hammock. Ahhhh. After your day at the spa, head over to Carmel Valley Ranch and enjoy a delicious lunch! Finish off the day and explore Carmel Wine Country and “wine down” with some wine tasting.

3. Carmel by the Sea

Carmel Beach

For a great day in Carmel by the Sea, which is about an hour down Highway One, simply turn off of Ocean Street and you are set to go for a day filled with shopping at some amazing shops and boutiques, then get some lunch (or brunch) at Stationaery, which is a delightful hidden gem of a restaurant with delicious food options, then cruise down to Carmel Beach and spend a day relishing in the white sand, turquoise blue ocean waters.

4. Pebble Beach

The Lone Cypress Pebble Beach

Another incredibly scenic drive (actually our whole Central Coast is scenic!) is 17 Mile Drive. There are 17 stops you can make along this 17 mile drive (including the infamous Lone Cypress Tree photographed above), so either pack a picnic or some snacks, but definitely make sure to charge your camera or phone to take 100s of photos of the scenery. Perhaps you have heard of the U.S. Open? Voted as the No. 1 Golf Course in the USA, it’s not wonder that the U.S. Open has been hosted here 6 times (2019 was the last time it was hosted here)! So grab your clubs, make a reservation and golf this gorgeous course! After you thought you couldn’t have a better day, be sure to book an appointment to get a massage at the Pebble Beach Spa! After your massage, you’re going to be so hungry, so walk on over to any of the restaurants at Pebble Beach.

5. Monterey and Pacific Grove

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Another must-do on your day-trip adventures is the Monterey Bay Aquarium! This incredible aquarium highly values ocean conservation and with over 200 exhibits and 35,000 sea creatures, you are guaranteed to have an amazing experience – no matter how old you are! Spend the day here and then walk to the Fisherman’s Wharf and grab a cup of clam chowder at Old Fisherman’s Grotto! Before you head back to Capitola, walk off your chowder and take a stroll along the path of Pacific Grove (which is a very short drive past the aquarium).

6. Moss Landing

Moss Landing at Sunset

Another place to plan a quick day trip adventure is Moss Landing! Only about 20 minutes from Capitola on your way to Monterey, is a great little stop at Elkhorn Slough. You’ve probably driven past it while on your way to Monterey or Carmel. Spend your time kayaking through the slough, spotting sea otters, sea lions and more. Walk along the jetty and spot some sun-bathing sea lions or look up in the sky and go bird-watching! After a fun day at Moss Landing, line up for the best sea food in the area at Phil’s Fish Market! Choose from a wide variety of delicious fresh fish and then afterward, walk down to the beach to watch the sunset into the ocean. What a perfect little day!

7. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Downtown Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Many travelers come to our area to visit Santa Cruz and go to the Boardwalk. We have the joy of sharing our happy place of Capitola Village with so many new travelers who come into our office and share that they “stumbled upon” Capitola Village and stay with us every year! Perhaps you can relate. Anyway, we think Santa Cruz is super special, too and it’s just a five minute drive up Highway One (or we recommend taking East Cliff Drive)! Not only do you have the fun rides, food, shops and beach at the Boardwalk, but there are tons of fun events scattered throughout the year, too. After you’ve spent the most fun day at the Boardwalk, be sure to go Downtown Santa Cruz, grab a bite at any of the delicious eateries at Abbott Square, and shop around through the dozens of locally-owned shops.

8. Davenport

Davenport

Wanna just get outta town for an hour or two? Davenport is our favorite Sunday afternoon adventure destination. Just 25 minutes or so driving North on Highway One is this darling little drive-by town called Davenport. Stop at Whale City Bakery for breakfast, then walk across the highway to the cliffs, take some pictures through the eucalyptus grove, and gaze out into the ocean searching for whales. After you’ve spent some relaxing moments here, drive just a little further up the road to Swanton Berry Farms. This is a farm stand off the side of the highway where you can taste and purchase their homemade jam, take a piece of strawberry shortcake from the fridge, or pour yourself some cider! You can also pick up some fresh strawberries, too at their U-Pick space! Be sure to bring cash with you because you can pay for your items via the honor system. How cool is that?

9. Half Moon Bay

Kayak at Half Moon Bay

Located about an hour north on Highway One is a lovely town called Half Moon Bay. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and a walking and shopping district on Main Street, you are sure to enjoy a wonderful getaway day trip to Half Moon Bay. There’s much to do here. From shopping eclectic and adorable small-town shops and boutiques on Main Street to kayaking or walking the path along the shore, you’re sure to love this town. If you like Italian food, we recommend getting reservations at Pasta Moon and watch the sunset with cocktails at the Ritz Carlton.

10. San Francisco

San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridge

Drive all the way up Highway One (roughly an hour and a half to two hours) to San Francisco. There’s undeniably an abundance of things to do in this amazing city. You can’t do it all in one day, that’s for sure. But, if we were to pick a couple things to do in a day-trip, we’d recommend spending the day at the San Francisco Zoo, which is located off of Highway One. Then after you’ve explored and said “hi” to all the animals, drive a little bit further into the city to the Golden Gate Bridge and stop for some seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf.

What are some of your favorite things to do in the day trip locations we have listed above? Can’t wait to hear all about your adventures in the Monterey Bay and beyond!
